Coconut Oil For Your Dog – A Nutty Idea? September 7, 2015 Health & Nutrition Coconut oil for dogs is not a nutty idea at all. In fact, when added to your dog’s diet, coconut oil has many beneficial qualities. While coconut oil is made up mostly of saturated fats, the saturated fats come from Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs). MCFAs are known to have tremendous health benefits. Lauric acid, a powerful anti-viral and anti-bacterial agent, is one of the MCFAs found in coconut oil. Like any supplement, coconut oil is not a “cure all” but it will definitely improve your dog’s overall health! Coconut oil has been found by many to help with the following skin problems: Reduces allergic reactions Makes your dog’s coat sleek and healthy Eliminates doggy odor Treats yeast infections Disinfect and heals wounds When applied topically it will speed the healing of hot spots, dry skin, cracked paws and cuts Coconut oil is also great for your dog’s digestion: Improves digestion Improves nutrient absorption Reduces bad doggy breath Helps with the elimination of hairballs In some cases it can even help with your dog’s bones and metabolism: Helps with weight loss Boosts your dog’s energy level Promotes normal thyroid function Aids in arthritis or ligament issues Helps prevent and/or control diabetes Instructions for oral administration: Give ½ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight daily.
